Jack Nicholson stepped out of the shadows for his 89th birthday, appearing in a rare photo shared by his daughter Lorraine Nicholson. The snapshot, posted on Instagram Stories on April 23, shows the legendary actor smiling and clapping alongside his longtime friend, singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell.
Lorraine, Jack's daughter with ex Rebecca Broussard, simply captioned the image “89!!” The photo offers a glimpse into the life of the notoriously private actor, who has largely retreated from the public eye since his last film role in 2010’s How Do You Know.
Despite his reclusiveness, Nicholson made a surprise appearance at SNL 50: The Anniversary Special to introduce Adam Sandler. Lorraine later revealed her father’s reluctance, telling W Magazine that Lorne Michaels, a close family friend, had to persuade him. “It was a real battle,” she said.
Director James L. Brooks, a longtime collaborator, remains hopeful that Nicholson will act again. “I'm sure he'll be working again,” Brooks told E! News in December. “I hope it's with me.”
For now, Nicholson seems content focusing on family. In December 2025, Lorraine posted a photo with her dad and brother Ray, captioned “november to remember.” The birthday celebration is the latest in a series of rare updates from the One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest star's children.
