In a deeply personal essay, Jake Reiner, the eldest son of Rob Reiner and Michele Reiner, has shared the harrowing moment he learned his parents had been killed. Writing in a Substack post titled "Mom and Dad," the 34-year-old described receiving a call from his sister Romy on Dec. 14, first informing him that their father was dead, then minutes later that their mother had also been killed. The couple was found dead in their home after attending Conan O'Brien's Christmas party. Their son Nick Reiner, 32, has been arrested and charged with their murders; he has pleaded not guilty.
Jake wrote that the car ride to his childhood home was "unendurable," and that his world had collapsed. He expressed heartbreak and anger over the future moments his parents would miss—his wedding, meeting his future children—and said he still wakes each morning having to convince himself it's not a nightmare. He also reflected on his parents' love: his mother's passion for musicals and family gatherings, and his father's support for his acting dreams and their shared love of baseball.
Jake asked for privacy and compassion as he and Romy navigate their grief, noting that some details of the tragedy belong only to their family. He emphasized the violence of losing both parents at once, with their brother at the center of the case.
