In March 2023, the JAMA Network introduced a new tool for peer reviewers: a checkbox to flag concerns related to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in submitted manuscripts. Reviewers were also invited to elaborate on these concerns in confidential comments to the editor.
A study presented at the 10th Peer Review Congress in September 2025 analyzed how frequently reviewers used this checkbox and categorized the nature of the EDI concerns raised. The research provides insight into how scholarly publishing is adapting to incorporate EDI considerations into the peer review process.
The findings highlight a growing awareness among reviewers of potential biases or gaps in study populations, authorship representation, and research questions that may overlook marginalized groups. By formalizing EDI feedback, JAMA Network aims to foster more inclusive research practices without compromising scientific rigor.
The video recording of the presentation was published on April 30, 2026, and is available on the Peer Review Congress YouTube channel.
