A revised law taking effect today in Japan limits purchases of over-the-counter (OTC) medications, such as cold and cough remedies, to one package per transaction for individuals under 18. The measure aims to curb the rising trend of "overdosing"—intentionally consuming excessive amounts of these drugs—among young people.

Under the amended Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Act, retailers must also verify the age of buyers and refuse sales to those under 18 who attempt to buy more than one box. The regulation applies to all OTC drugs, including those containing ingredients that can cause euphoria or sedation when taken in large quantities.

Japanese health authorities have reported a sharp increase in hospitalizations due to OTC drug overdoses, particularly among teenagers and young adults. The new rules are part of broader efforts to address substance abuse and protect minors from the dangers of self-medication.
