The Japan Meteorological Agency has confirmed that a sudden, powerful gust of wind that struck parts of Tochigi Prefecture on the night of May 1 was likely a downburst. The weather phenomenon caused significant damage, including torn-off roofs and collapsed walls, in Utsunomiya and Tochigi cities.
According to the agency, the downburst—a strong downward current of air that spreads out upon hitting the ground—produced winds strong enough to lift roofing materials and topple fences. Local residents reported hearing a loud roar before the wind struck. Emergency crews have been dispatched to assess the damage and ensure public safety.
No injuries have been reported so far. Officials are urging residents to stay cautious as additional severe weather may be possible in the coming days.
