Jennie Garth has opened up about her famously turbulent relationship with former Beverly Hills, 90210 co-star Shannen Doherty, painting a picture of a complex friendship defined by youthful clashes and ultimate respect.

In a recent interview, Garth addressed the long-rumored feud that captivated fans during the show's heyday. She described their dynamic as a rollercoaster of friendship and conflict, largely fueled by the pressures of sudden fame and a competitive environment.

"We didn't have the capacity or the language at that point," Garth told Good Day New York. "Everything was happening so fast. We never really sat down and talked it out. But we were friends and then we would clash and then we were friends."

The actress, now 54, reflected on how external forces amplified their tensions. "We were young," she explained. "That's what you do when you're growing up and you're in this competitive environment and the script is pitting you against one another, the media, the world, and then it's hard. The lines sometimes get blurred."

Garth acknowledged that the media often sensationalized their relationship for headlines, while she and Doherty—who played onscreen frenemies Kelly Taylor and Brenda Walsh—navigated their real-life connection.

"The press doesn't know anything about what's going on in a relationship," Garth said. "So they made it what would sell headlines and we were living it. And we were growing and learning the whole time."

Despite the complications, Garth emphasized there were "no bad vibes" between them, and she has come to appreciate Doherty's influence in her life. Following Doherty's death from breast cancer in 2024 at age 53, Garth has spoken warmly about her former co-star's legacy.

"At the end of the day, we really did have a respect for one another as strong women who have lasted a long time in this industry," Garth told People. "And she taught me a lot. She taught me a lot of really good things about being strong, standing up for myself, using my voice. And I'm forever grateful for her and for the relationship that we had."

Garth concluded that while their relationship was "complicated at times," it remained "really good," offering a nuanced perspective on a Hollywood friendship that has fascinated the public for decades.
