Jersey Tourism Sees Silver Lining Amid Global Travel Uncertainty

Despite rising geopolitical tensions and economic pressures stemming from the Iran conflict, Jersey's tourism industry is finding unexpected opportunities in the current global landscape.

Marcus Calvani of the Jersey Hospitality Association reported that the first months of the year showed stronger performance compared to the same period in 2025. However, he acknowledged that the situation has created a complex picture for the sector.

"There's confidence, consumer confidence, price increases and a massive amount of uncertainty," Calvani stated. "At the moment, things are still looking good - probably not as good as we would have hoped them to have been, understandably."

The conflict, which began on February 28th, has disrupted oil and gas shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to increased costs that are affecting businesses across the island. Seymour Hotels has already been notified by suppliers about impending price increases, including fuel surcharges on deliveries to Jersey.

Matt Seymour, managing director of Seymour Hotels, explained: "A local food and beverage supplier has recently explained to us that they have been notified of fuel surcharges on delivery to the island, and we can expect that will get passed onto us."

Yet both industry leaders see potential benefits emerging from the global uncertainty. With British holidaymakers reportedly seeking alternatives to avoid travel through the Middle East, Jersey could position itself as an attractive destination.

"Is Jersey a good place to capture people for a safe, short break who would've otherwise been going elsewhere? Absolutely," Calvani emphasized. "So we've got to look at the positives and act on them as well."

Seymour echoed this perspective, noting that rising flight costs for long-distance travel might work in Jersey's favor. "How much advantage Jersey can take from that is to be seen, so we'll have to keep an eye on that," he added.

The industry now faces the dual challenge of managing increased operational costs while capitalizing on the island's potential appeal as a secure, accessible destination during turbulent times.
