Gilas Pilipinas has called up Juan Gomez de Liano to replace the injured Scottie Thompson for the upcoming FIBA World Cup Asian qualifiers. Thompson, a key guard for the national team, was ruled out due to a hand injury sustained during a PBA game. Gomez de Liano, who previously played for the Philippines in the FIBA Asia Cup, will join the squad for the crucial matches against Hong Kong and New Zealand. The Philippine team is aiming to secure a spot in the next World Cup, and the addition of Gomez de Liano provides much-needed depth in the backcourt.
"We were sad to lose Scottie, but we are confident Juan can step up and contribute right away," said head coach Chot Reyes. "He has experience playing with this group and understands our system."
The qualifiers are set to take place in February, with Gilas hosting Hong Kong before traveling to face New Zealand.
