British tennis standout Sonay Kartal has successfully announced her return to the WTA Tour, securing a decisive victory at the China Open following a grueling six-month battle with a lower back injury.
The 24-year-old, currently ranked 129th in the world, dispatched Spanish qualifier Andrea Lazaro Garcia in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, in Beijing. Kartal showcased remarkable resilience, breaking her opponent's serve five times and capitalizing on four double faults while maintaining a rock-solid 69% first-serve percentage.
Kartal’s back issues initially sidelined her following the Indian Wells tournament in March. She made her initial competitive reappearance just days ago at the Billie Jean King Cup on September 22, where she put up a fierce fight before narrowly falling to world number 26 Marie Bouzkova. Now back to winning ways, Kartal advances to face China’s 31st seed, Wang Xinyu, in her quest to climb back up the global rankings.
It was a mixed day for other British competitors. Harriet Dart battled through a grueling three-set match to overcome China's Yihan Qu 6-2, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5. However, Cameron Norrie was ousted by world number two Alexander Zverev in a hard-fought 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 defeat. Meanwhile, at the Japan Open, Arthur Fery was eliminated by Portuguese lucky loser Jaime Faria 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.
On the ATP Tour, defending champion Carlos Alcaraz shook off some visible rust to claim a 7-6 (7-1), 4-6, 6-1 victory over Alex Michelsen. The Spanish world number three, who recently missed five months due to a wrist injury before returning at the US Open, struggled with his serve but managed to save five of 13 break points. Alcaraz moves on to play Italy’s Matteo Arnaldi.
In a tougher comeback story, Denmark's Holger Rune suffered a heavy defeat in his first ATP Tour match in nearly a year. Having dropped out of the top 100 following a devastating Achilles tendon tear last autumn, Rune was easily dismissed by France's Kyrian Jacquet 6-3, 6-1 in Tokyo.
