Kent Football Club Halts Social Media Comments to Protect Players' Wellbeing

Kent County Cricket Club has taken the unusual step of disabling comments on its social media accounts, citing a "duty of care" to players and staff. The decision, announced ahead of Friday's home match against Derbyshire, follows a string of poor performances and heightened online criticism.

Head coach Adam Hollioake said the move was not intended to silence legitimate opinions but to shield players and their families from abusive remarks. "The majority of our supporters are behind us and criticise us fairly, but when this crosses the line, it can be damaging to not only the players but their friends, family and loved ones," he explained.

Kent, which has over 104,000 followers on X and more than 64,000 on Instagram, has not said how long the suspension will last. Fans can still provide feedback via email and at members' forums, one of which will be held during the Derbyshire match at Canterbury.

While individual athletes often limit their social media use, it is rare for an entire club to block fan engagement. Kent's statement described it as a "short-term move" to allow players and staff to "work and play with freedom and clarity."

The club has struggled on the field, finishing bottom of Division Two in 2025 and currently winless in three Championship matches this season. Several key players have departed in recent years, and the batting lineup has faltered, with opener Zak Crawley managing a top score of just 31.

Hollioake, a former England Test player and Surrey legend, has faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his brother Ben and friend Graham Thorpe. He said his experiences have shaped his approach. "Throughout my career in cricket as a player and a coach, I've had to deal with a lot, that's no secret," he added.
