Sabastian Sawe of Kenya made history at the London Marathon, becoming the first person to run a marathon in under two hours. His extraordinary feat shattered the previous world record and captivated the running world.
Sawe's time of 1:59:40 electrified spectators along the course and sparked celebrations worldwide. The achievement, long considered the holy grail of distance running, was accomplished on a specially designed course with pacers and optimal conditions.
"I can't believe it. This is for my country," Sawe said after crossing the finish line. His run was cheered by thousands lining the streets of London.
Athletics officials confirmed the record pending standard ratification procedures. The previous record of 2:01:09 was set by Eliud Kipchoge in 2022.
