Keychron has unveiled its latest high-performance mechanical keyboards—the V5 Ultra 8K and Q1 Ultra 8K—which boast unprecedented battery longevity thanks to a shift to ZMK open-source firmware. These models represent the pinnacle of the company's V and Q series, offering significant upgrades that cater to both everyday users and keyboard enthusiasts.

Priced at $119.99, the V5 Ultra 8K features a near-full-size 1800-layout with a plastic case, while the $229.99 Q1 Ultra 8K sports a compact 75-percent layout encased in a premium milled-aluminum chassis. Despite differences in materials and design, both keyboards deliver an exceptional typing experience, enhanced by upgraded screw-in stabilizers that reduce wobble on larger keys and improve tactile feedback. They also introduce new Silk POM switches in red (linear), brown (tactile), and banana variants, further refining the user feel.

The standout feature, however, is the remarkable battery life. Keychron claims up to 660 hours of usage on a single charge—approximately four times longer than previous Max models. For context, with eight hours of daily use and backlights off, users can expect around 83 days before needing to recharge. This endurance is largely attributed to the adoption of ZMK firmware, known for its efficiency, and marks a leap forward for wireless mechanical keyboards, which typically require weekly charging.

ZMK’s most obvious benefit for most people is its battery efficiency. It’s the reason Keychron claims you can get up to 660 hours of use on an Ultra 8K board—about four times longer than its claims for the Max models.

In addition to battery improvements, the Ultra 8K series supports 8,000Hz wireless polling for faster response times, an upgrade from the 1,000Hz found in earlier versions. While this may appeal to competitive gamers, the practical impact for most users is minimal. The keyboards also utilize Keychron's browser-based Launcher software for easy key remapping, lighting customization, and macro settings, simplifying the process compared to raw ZMK tools.

Overall, the V5 Ultra 8K and Q1 Ultra 8K combine robust build quality, enhanced typing mechanics, and marathon battery life, positioning them as top contenders in Keychron's lineup. As the company continues to innovate, these models set a new standard for wireless mechanical keyboards, promising both performance and convenience for a wide range of users.
