Kneecap's Móglaí Bap Opens Up About Heartbreaking New Song 'Irish Goodbye' Honoring His Late Mother

Kneecap's Móglaí Bap has shared the deeply personal story behind the band's upcoming single 'Irish Goodbye', a track that confronts the grief and complexity of losing his mother to suicide.

The song, featuring Kae Tempest, is set for release tomorrow (April 28) and will appear on the trio's forthcoming album 'Fenian', due out May 1 via Heavenly Recordings. Previous singles from the album include the title track, 'Smugglers & Scholars', and 'Liars Tale'.

In a heartfelt social media post, the rapper—whose real name is Naoise Ó Cairealláin—revealed that he never intended to write a song about his mother's passing. However, after watching a documentary featuring his father from the 1990s, he saw his mother happy for the first time in old footage, which stirred intense emotions.

He recalled writing a previous song, 'MAM', in 2020 while his mother was battling depression, hoping she would hear it and recognize her worth. Tragically, she died by suicide before he could play it for her.

"Suicide is such a complex thing," Bap wrote. "It's hard to confront the reality of what has happened. You get caught up in the dark times." The new song focuses on the mundane, everyday moments they shared, which he realized he missed most after her passing.

Bap spoke about the difficulty of processing this specific kind of grief, which carries additional burdens of anger, shame, and guilt. He emphasized the importance of open conversations and seeking therapy, noting that it took years for him to heal. "You can't carry this stuff around with you and blame yourself," he said. "It's not your fault."

The track was produced by Dan Carey, with Tempest delivering a vulnerable performance. Bap hopes the song offers relief to others struggling with similar loss.

In addition to new music, Kneecap recently performed in Cuba on the Nuestra América Convoy with Jeremy Corbyn and have spoken out against anti-Semitism.
