Knight and Gibson Power Somerset to Thrilling Victory Over Lancashire

Somerset secured a dramatic four-wicket victory against Lancashire in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup at Southport, propelled by commanding half-centuries from Heather Knight and Dani Gibson.

Lancashire set a challenging target of 259-8 from their 50 overs, anchored by captain Ellie Threlkeld's fluent 71 and Fi Morris's 52. Despite a strong bowling performance from England spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who claimed 3-46, Somerset chased down the total with 13 balls to spare.

Lancashire's innings was built on a crucial 88-run partnership between Threlkeld and Morris, but Somerset's bowlers, led by Alex Griffiths with 3-51, kept the hosts in check.

Somerset's chase began steadily before Knight and Gibson took center stage. Knight top-scored with a composed 63, forming a vital partnership with Gibson after the visitors found themselves at 132-4. Gibson then unleashed a blistering 60 off just 53 balls, featuring two sixes and eight fours, to shift the momentum decisively in Somerset's favor.

Gibson's aggressive batting dismantled Lancashire's attack, ensuring Somerset stayed ahead of the required run rate even after Knight's dismissal.

Though Ecclestone eventually removed both Knight and Gibson, Charlie Dean and Jess Hazell guided Somerset home unbeaten on 21 each, sealing a memorable win. The result highlights Somerset's resilience and the match-winning capabilities of their star batters under pressure.
