A Kosovo court has sentenced three Serb separatists to prison for their involvement in the 2023 attack in the village of Banjska. The incident triggered a violent confrontation with police, resulting in the deaths of one police officer and three gunmen.
The attack, which occurred in September 2023, saw a group of heavily armed Serb separatists storm the village, leading to a prolonged firefight with Kosovo police. The court found the three defendants guilty of participating in the assault, which authorities described as a coordinated attempt to destabilize the region.
"This verdict sends a clear message that such acts of violence will not be tolerated," a court spokesperson stated.
The sentenced individuals are believed to be part of a broader network linked to separatist movements in northern Kosovo. The trial highlighted ongoing tensions between Kosovo's Albanian majority and the Serb minority, particularly in the northern territories.
International observers have called for restraint and dialogue, emphasizing the need for peaceful resolution of ethnic conflicts. Meanwhile, Kosovo officials have vowed to continue efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice.
