Kostyuk Outlasts Andreeva to Claim Madrid Open Title

Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk defeated Mirra Andreeva in straight sets, 6-3 7-5, to win the Madrid Open and capture her first WTA 1000 title. The world No. 23 broke early in the opening set and held off a late rally from the 19-year-old Russian to secure victory in 1 hour 37 minutes.

"It feels unbelievable to stand here right now," said the 26th seed after the match. "It took me many years to reach this point. The one word I think about is consistency — showing up every day no matter how hard it is."

Kostyuk is the second player outside the top 20 to win the Madrid Open. She broke for a 4-2 lead in the first set and clinched it when Andreeva sent a forehand long. In the second set, Kostyuk saved two set points before Andreeva double-faulted at 5-6, giving Kostyuk a chance to serve for the championship. She converted her third match point as Andreeva's backhand sailed long.

The title is Kostyuk's third on the WTA Tour and her second this season, following her win in Rouen two weeks ago. For Andreeva, starting at No. 8, it was her first defeat in three WTA 1000 finals.

In the men's doubles final, Britain's Henry Patten and Finland's Harri Helioevaara defeated Manuel Guinard and Guido Andreozzi 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
