The Abante party-list group has called out Education Secretary Leonor Briones for referring to fellow lawmaker Rodante Marcoleta as a woman. In a statement, Abante representative Joseph Stephen Paduano expressed dismay over what he described as a disrespectful remark made by Luistro during a recent hearing.
"It is alarming that a high-ranking official would make such a careless and offensive comment. Referring to a male colleague as 'her' not only shows lack of respect but also sets a bad example for the youth," Paduano said.
The incident occurred during a House hearing where Luistro, in an apparent slip, used the feminine pronoun when addressing Marcoleta. The exchange quickly drew attention, with netizens and politicians alike weighing in.
Marcoleta, a deputy speaker and known ally of President Duterte, has yet to issue a personal statement on the matter. However, his office confirmed that they have received the complaint from Abante and are considering their next steps.
Education officials have declined to comment, saying they are reviewing the transcript of the hearing before issuing an official response.
