Lewis Pullman on Dad Bill's Unique Approach to Life Advice: 'He Lets Me Make My Own Mistakes'

As Lewis Pullman's star continues to rise, he's opening up about the unexpected way his father, veteran actor Bill Pullman, offers guidance. In an exclusive interview at the premiere of his new film Remarkably Bright Creatures, Lewis shared that while his dad is supportive, he doesn't dictate how things should be done.

"He definitely allows me to carve my own path and make my own mistakes and learn from them—and I think that's helped me a lot in so many ways," Lewis said.

The Top Gun: Maverick actor emphasized that Bill, known for roles in While You Were Sleeping and Independence Day, gives career advice but never forces a specific blueprint. Lewis noted that this hands-off approach has been invaluable.

Interestingly, Lewis's career has intersected with his father's in unexpected ways. In Remarkably Bright Creatures, he co-stars with Sally Field, who worked with Bill in the 2019 National Theatre Live production of All My Sons. Lewis admitted that seeing his dad in that play was so emotionally powerful that he didn't approach Sally afterward. However, working with her on set was a different story.

"She's so exhilarating to work with because she's so in tune with the moment and with her instincts. ... Basically my job was just to react and be there with her, and that was very freeing and very exciting," Lewis said.

Remarkably Bright Creatures is set for release on May 8.
