Leyton Orient's 'Weak' Squad Wasted My Season, Fumes Wellens

Richie Wellens launched a blistering attack on his Leyton Orient players, accusing them of wasting a year of his managerial career with lacklustre performances.

The O's secured their League One status on the final day with a 2-2 draw against Burton Albion, but Wellens was far from satisfied. He apologised to fans for previous criticism, explaining he had been shielding a 'really weak' squad.

"Week in, week out, they get served up with rubbish," Wellens told BBC Radio London. "Too many players have wasted 10 months of their career and wasted my time. I've had one year of my management wasted by the players."

The manager criticised his side for playing for a draw against Burton and celebrating survival on the pitch. "Clap the fans, they've earned it," he said. "But don't be celebrating with your family. Get off the pitch, it's been an embarrassing season."

Wellens promised a summer overhaul, targeting more athleticism and character. "The ones with contracts will struggle to get new ones, and out-of-contract players we want to move on," he added.

However, he admitted star striker Dom Ballard, the League One player of the year, could be sold if an acceptable offer arrives.
