Lithium-ion Batteries: A Growing Concern for Airlines

The use of lithium-ion batteries on flights has become a significant concern for airlines, with the potential to cause fires and put passengers' lives at risk. A recent incident on a flight to Las Vegas highlights the dangers of these batteries, as a passenger's battery pack overheated and burst into flames.

The Incident

Ben Wodecki, a technology journalist, was on the flight when the incident occurred. He described the scene as 'dramatic' and said that the flight crew were 'worried' and 'dour' as they rushed to the rear of the plane to deal with the situation. The plane was met by fire crews on the runway after landing, and the device was dropped into a container of water to prevent further damage.

The Risks

According to Jonathan Nicholson at the UK's Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), lithium-ion batteries are one of the top three risks for the airline industry. A recent study showed that there are two lithium-ion battery-related incidents a week worldwide, ranging from devices smoking or catching fire in airport baggage halls to incidents on flights.

The Causes

Nicholson explains that the prevalence of lithium-ion related incidents is down to 'more people, more flights, more devices'. Pierre Kubiak, a principal engineer specializing in battery technology, adds that the lithium itself does not burn, but the organic material and plastic surrounding it can get very hot, very fast, causing fires.

The Solutions

The CAA and airlines are reiterating their warnings and sticking to tried and tested methods of ensuring staff are drilled to quickly deal with incidents. The most important thing is to cool the device down, and airlines are advising passengers to keep devices in the cabin, not in overhead compartments or the hold. There are no economic alternatives to lithium-ion technology at present, but Kubiak suggests that there should be more focus on safeguarding around the existing technology.

The Future

As the use of lithium-ion batteries continues to grow, it is essential that passengers are aware of the risks and take necessary precautions. Airlines and regulators must also continue to work together to find solutions to mitigate these risks and ensure the safety of passengers.
