Liverpool Parts Ways with Arne Slot, Targets Iraola as Replacement

Liverpool have sacked head coach Arne Slot after two seasons, despite leading the club to their 20th league title in his debut campaign. The Dutchman's second season saw a decline, with the Reds finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Andoni Iraola, who recently left Bournemouth, has emerged as the leading candidate to replace Slot. Sources confirm that Liverpool have made an initial approach to discuss the role.

Club owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) released a statement acknowledging the difficulty of the decision: "The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC has been significant and successful. Our appreciation for everything he has achieved could not be greater."

The decision was driven by FSG chief executive Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes. Despite earlier assurances that a change was not on the agenda, the hierarchy now believes a more aggressive, front-foot style is needed.

Iraola, 43, is highly regarded in Europe for his attacking approach. He previously worked with Hughes at Bournemouth, where he guided the Cherries to Europa League qualification, finishing just three points behind Liverpool.

Slot had replaced Jurgen Klopp in 2024 after Klopp's nine-year tenure. Earlier this month, Mohamed Salah called for a return to "heavy metal attacking football" following a defeat to Aston Villa.

Liverpool invested heavily last summer, spending £415m on signings including Alexander Isak (£125m) and Florian Wirtz (£116m). The club also mourned the loss of forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash in July.

FSG concluded: "The team's trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. Arne leaves with our gratitude and a Premier League title to his name."
