Scotland's number one golfer, Robert MacIntyre, heads into The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale with a newfound confidence. Reflecting on his debut at the 2019 Open, where he finished sixth, the 29-year-old now considers himself a much-improved player. Currently ranked in the world's top 20 and fresh off a third-place finish at the Scottish Open, MacIntyre believes he has the game to contend.
"In 2019, I felt like I was just making up the numbers," MacIntyre said. "Now I know if I play well, I've got a chance to win."
The two-time Ryder Cup player emphasized the evolution in his mindset. While he once teed off with no expectations, he now carries the weight of expectation without feeling pressure. "I know if I play my best golf, I'll have a chance come Sunday," he added.
Royal Birkdale presents a stern test with fast fairways and strong winds. MacIntyre has adopted a strategic approach, favoring shorter clubs off the tee to avoid pot bunkers. "The ball was running out 50 yards on some shots, even with a six-iron," he explained. "Hitting greens in regulation is key – it's about playing smart golf."
Also in the field is Jack McDonald, the only other Scot competing. The 33-year-old from Ayrshire, who qualified via Dundonald Links, works as a trainee PGA professional at Whitecraigs Golf Club. This will be his second Open appearance, having made his debut at Royal Troon last year.
