Italian authorities have captured a high-ranking mafia boss who had been evading justice for over a year, apprehending him at a luxury villa along the picturesque Amalfi Coast.
Roberto Mazzarella, 48, a prominent figure within Naples' notorious Camorra crime syndicate, was arrested in the town of Vietri sul Mare. He had been on Italy's list of most dangerous fugitives since escaping custody in January of last year while facing murder charges.
According to the Carabinieri military police, Mazzarella was living under a false identity at the upscale property. The operation involved multiple patrol boats positioned offshore as heavily armed officers entered the villa. Mazzarella was with his wife and two children during the arrest and offered no resistance.
"The Mazzarella clan has long been associated with counterfeiting operations in Naples, particularly banknote forgery," noted police in their statement.
During the raid, authorities seized three luxury watches, approximately €20,000 in cash, several falsified documents, and multiple mobile phones. This arrest follows last month's detention of 16 individuals allegedly connected to the Mazzarella clan on cyber fraud charges.
Italian news agency Ansa reported that Mazzarella had been using the villa as his hideout while authorities intensified their search. The dramatic footage released by police shows the moment officers stormed the property, marking the end of an extensive manhunt for one of Italy's most wanted criminals.
