The bill, which passed the state legislature, sought to halt new AI data center construction pending a study of their energy consumption and environmental impact.
In her veto message, the governor argued that a moratorium would stifle economic growth and innovation at a time when Maine is competing for high-tech investments. She emphasized that data centers bring jobs and tax revenue, and that existing regulations already address energy use and environmental concerns.
Supporters of the freeze had pointed to the massive power demands of AI data centers—some consuming as much electricity as small towns—and warned of strain on the grid and rising costs for residents. Critics of the veto accused the governor of prioritizing corporate interests over community well-being.
