Authorities in Manila have urged residents to wear face masks and limit outdoor activities after air quality deteriorated to "very unhealthy" levels, posing serious health risks. The city's pollution index spiked due to a combination of vehicle emissions, industrial smoke, and lack of wind dispersion, officials said.
"We advise everyone, especially those with respiratory conditions, to stay indoors and use masks when going out," a health department spokesperson stated.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations exceeded safe limits by several times. Schools in affected areas have been advised to suspend outdoor activities. Environmental groups called for stricter emission controls and a shift to cleaner energy sources to prevent recurring episodes.
As of press time, no flight cancellations or major disruptions have been reported, but hospitals have noted an increase in patients with breathing difficulties.
