Manila Opens Public Pools for Free to Combat Scorching Heatwave

In response to soaring temperatures, the Manila city government has announced free access to public swimming pools, providing residents with a much-needed respite from the intense heat.

Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan stated that the initiative aims to offer a safe and accessible cooling option for citizens, especially vulnerable groups like children and the elderly, during the ongoing heatwave.

"We want to ensure that everyone, regardless of economic status, has a place to cool down and stay healthy during these extreme weather conditions," Lacuna-Pangan emphasized.

The free swimming program covers several public pools across the city, with extended operating hours on weekends to accommodate more visitors. Lifeguards and medical personnel will be on duty to ensure safety.

This move comes as the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) continues to issue heat index warnings, with temperatures frequently reaching dangerous levels that can cause heat-related illnesses.

Residents have welcomed the initiative, with many expressing relief at having a cost-free way to escape the oppressive heat. The city government has also reminded the public to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged sun exposure, even when using the pools.
