Manipur Remembers: Thousands March to Mark Third Anniversary of Ethnic Violence

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in India’s northeastern state of Manipur on Thursday to mark three years since the outbreak of deadly ethnic clashes that have killed hundreds and displaced tens of thousands.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Imphal, the state capital, carrying banners and chanting slogans for peace and justice. The protests were largely peaceful, with participants laying wreaths at memorials to those who lost their lives in the violence.

The clashes, which began in May 2023 between the Kuki tribal community and the Meitei majority, have resulted in over 250 deaths and displaced more than 60,000 people, according to official figures. The violence has been marked by arson, gunfights, and mob attacks, with churches and temples also targeted.

Civil society groups and opposition parties have accused the state and central governments of failing to restore lasting peace or ensure justice for the victims. Many protesters demanded a separate administration for the tribal-dominated hill districts and called for the removal of the state's embattled chief minister.

"We are here to remind the government that we have not forgotten the bloodshed," said one protester, who declined to be named. "Our demand is simple: justice and a permanent solution."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state earlier this year and promised development and peace, but critics say little has changed on the ground. The anniversary comes amid a fragile ceasefire, with occasional flare-ups of violence still reported.

In a statement, the Manipur state government appealed for calm and said it was committed to brokering a lasting peace. "We urge all communities to embrace dialogue and reject violence," a spokesperson said.

The United Nations and human rights groups have called for an independent investigation into the clashes and urged both sides to engage in reconciliation talks.
