Country music star Maren Morris has opened up about what she calls a "f--ked up" first relationship with a woman after publicly coming out as bisexual in 2024.
In a recent TikTok video, the 36-year-old Grammy winner described an experience she characterized as "borderline extortion" and filled with threats to her reputation.
"Within three weeks of this completely falling apart, it was lies, threats to my reputation and borderline extortion," Morris revealed. "It was pretty f--ked up. And for that to be my first experience, it was just so depressing."
The singer, who was previously married to musician Ryan Hurd from 2018 to 2024, said she entered the relationship with clear communication about not wanting anything serious. "I'm at a point in my life right now where just I don't have that to give," she explained. "I was very clear about that because I'm all about communication, and she was like, 'Oh, totally. I'm down.'"
Morris said the situation deteriorated rapidly, leaving her shaken. What made the experience particularly disheartening, she noted, was learning from friends in the lesbian community that such toxic dynamics are "very normal" in early same-sex relationships.
"'You start seeing women and one is going to almost ruin your life,'" Morris recalled her friends telling her. "'We've all been there. You just have to push through.'"
The "Bones" singer, who shares a 6-year-old son with her ex-husband, now says she's "just really cool being alone" for the time being, jokingly referring to the experience as "bi trauma."
This revelation comes after Morris previously discussed the challenges of navigating new relationship dynamics following her divorce. Last year, she admitted on a podcast that she sometimes struggles to distinguish between deep female friendship and romantic connection.
"I have confusion sometimes because I can connect with a woman, any woman within like two minutes," Morris explained. "We'll be talking about our childhoods. We'll be talking about the bully when we were 13. We will get into it so quickly."
She added that this rapid connection between women creates what she calls a "hard delineation of romance versus friendship" in her dating life.
Despite the difficult first experience, Morris remains open about her journey, having publicly embraced her bisexuality during Pride Month two years ago. Her candid revelations continue to resonate with fans navigating similar relationship challenges.
