The Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) has announced an extension for seafarer credentials that are expiring during the ongoing crisis, ensuring that Filipino seafarers can continue working without disruption. The move aims to address the challenges faced by seafarers who are unable to renew their documents due to restrictions.
In a statement, MARINA said that certificates and licenses that expire between certain dates will remain valid for an additional period, allowing seafarers to maintain their employment and avoid administrative penalties. The extension covers various documents including certificates of competency, endorsements, and other training certificates.
This decision comes as a relief to the maritime industry, which relies heavily on Filipino seafarers. Industry groups had earlier called for such measures to prevent a shortage of qualified personnel. MARINA assured that it is working on long-term solutions to streamline the renewal process and support the sector during these challenging times.
