In a significant win for law enforcement, Brazilian police have recovered eight valuable illustrations by French artist Henri Matisse, stolen from a library in São Paulo last year.
The recovered artworks, estimated to be worth around $200,000, were found at a residence in São Bernardo do Campo, a suburb of São Paulo. A 44-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene, suspected of storing the stolen items on behalf of those accused of orchestrating the theft.
The heist, which took place on December 7, involved two thieves overpowering a security guard and an elderly couple before making off with the Matisse illustrations and five engravings by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari. While the Matisse works have been recovered, the Portinari engravings remain missing, with police suspecting they may have been sold.
The investigation has led to the arrest of several individuals, including a man described as a prolific art thief, who is believed to have planned and directed the crime. The local department of culture has confirmed that the recovered Matisse illustrations have been returned to the library, with security measures improved to prevent similar incidents in the future.
