Health officials are warning that measles can be transmitted even before the first symptoms appear, making it extremely difficult to contain. The virus, which is 10 times more contagious than influenza, has already caused 203 confirmed cases in Tokyo this year—the highest number in a decade.

According to medical experts, measles is infectious from one day before the onset of symptoms. The disease typically begins with cold-like signs such as fever, cough, and runny nose, followed by a characteristic red rash that spreads from the face to the rest of the body.

"People aged 26 to 53 are particularly at risk because they may have received only one dose of the vaccine or none at all," said a specialist in a recent TBS NEWS DIG segment. "It's crucial to check your vaccination record and consider a booster if needed."

The Japanese Society for Infectious Diseases has issued an urgent statement recommending that adults in this age group verify their immunization history. Children typically receive two doses of the MMR vaccine, but many adults may not have completed the full schedule.

Measles can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia and encephalitis, especially in young children and immunocompromised individuals. The best protection remains vaccination.

"The biggest challenge is that people don't know they're contagious until after they've spread the virus," warned the expert. "Staying up-to-date on vaccines is the most effective way to prevent outbreaks."

As Golden Week approaches, health authorities are urging travelers to ensure they are fully vaccinated before visiting crowded areas or traveling abroad.
