Meryl Streep is taking fans back to the spandex-filled days of Mamma Mia! with a cheeky behind-the-scenes anecdote.
During a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the legendary actress recalled the hilarious moment Colin Firth first laid eyes on co-star Pierce Brosnan squeezed into a skin-tight bodysuit. The actors were gearing up to perform the musical's iconic "Dancing Queen" and "Waterloo" sequences when Firth realized he might be a bit visually outmatched by the former James Bond.
"I don't think Colin Firth has ever recovered from this moment in spandex," Streep joked to Colbert. She explained that when the two men emerged from their dressing rooms, Firth took one look at Brosnan's form-fitting getup and immediately quipped, "I need socks."
Beyond sharing racy memories from the 2008 blockbuster, Streep enthusiastically endorsed the idea of returning for a third film. When asked if she would be on board for another Mamma Mia! installment, the Oscar winner emphatically replied, "Damn yes!"
Streep isn't the only one eager to pack her bags for another musical adventure. Brosnan has previously championed the idea of completing a cinematic "trifecta," noting that it is "criminal" how much fun the cast has making the movies. Co-star Amanda Seyfried has also confirmed that the star-studded ensemble—which includes Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, and Dominic Cooper—is highly motivated for an onscreen reunion.
The dream of a threequel is already inching closer to reality. Judy Craymer, the creator and producer behind the Mamma Mia! franchise, has confirmed that a script is in development.
"We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen," Craymer promised, highlighting the deep friendships that have blossomed among the cast since the original film debuted.
