Meta's VR Pricing Strategy: A Double-Edged Sword for Innovation

Meta has shipped nearly every VR headset it has ever made within the $200 to $600 price range, with the Quest Pro being a notable exception that was quickly discontinued. This pricing ceiling is not arbitrary—it's the sweet spot Meta believes is necessary to achieve mass market adoption and the network effects that underpin its billion-user strategy.

However, according to Ian Hamilton of Good VR, this approach comes with a significant trade-off. Premium features such as OLED displays and eye tracking push costs well beyond that ceiling, effectively locking Meta out of the hardware innovations that could truly advance the technology. Hamilton suggests this constraint is why Meta's CTO, Andrew Bosworth, has shifted focus toward AI glasses instead.
