Metro Manila's Nitrogen Dioxide Levels Drop to Pre-Landfill Fire Norms

Air quality in Metro Manila has improved significantly, with nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels returning to readings recorded before the Navotas landfill fire. The decrease marks a recovery from the pollution spike caused by the blaze, which had raised concerns among residents and environmental groups.

According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), monitoring stations across the metro have reported a steady decline in NO2 concentrations over the past weeks. The levels are now comparable to those observed prior to the fire incident, which began in late January.

"This is a positive development for public health," said a DENR official. "Nitrogen dioxide can aggravate respiratory conditions, so returning to baseline levels is crucial for Metro Manila residents."

The landfill fire, which burned for several days, released large amounts of smoke and harmful gases, including NO2. Authorities implemented measures to contain the blaze and mitigate its environmental impact. Since the fire was extinguished, air quality monitoring has shown a consistent downward trend.

Local government units have been urged to maintain vigilance and continue efforts to reduce air pollution from other sources, such as vehicle emissions and industrial activity. The DENR emphasized the importance of sustained monitoring and enforcement of clean air regulations to prevent future spikes.

Residents are advised to stay informed about air quality updates and to take necessary precautions, especially those with pre-existing health conditions.
