Metz defender Tahirys dos Santos has signed his first professional contract, marking a triumphant return after surviving a devastating bar fire in Switzerland that claimed 41 lives.
The 19-year-old was among the injured in the New Year's Eve blaze at the Le Constellation bar in the ski resort of Crans-Montana, sustaining burns to 30% of his body that required a skin graft. Dos Santos, who was credited with helping rescue his partner during the incident, has now secured a one-year deal with the French club.
"This moment has an even more special meaning after the difficult months I went through in hospital," dos Santos told the club's website. "This ordeal made me stronger and taught me to never give up. I want to send all my support to everyone who is still fighting. Never lose hope."
Dos Santos returned to action for Metz's reserve team on April 11, demonstrating remarkable resilience after the traumatic event. The young defender, who joined Metz's academy at age eight, was named captain of the reserve side at the start of this season.
The signing comes as Metz faces relegation from Ligue 1, sitting bottom of the table with just three wins from 30 matches and trailing safety by 10 points with only four games remaining.
