Mexico and Peru Restore Diplomatic Relations

Mexico and Peru have agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations following a row over the granting of asylum to a former Peruvian prime minister.

The two countries released a joint statement highlighting their "historic ties of brotherhood, friendship and cooperation" as the motivation behind the reconciliation.

The decision to restore diplomatic relations comes after a new Peruvian president took office, marking a significant shift in the country's political landscape.

The former Peruvian Prime Minister, Betssy Chávez, was granted asylum by Mexico in November 2025, sparking a diplomatic row between the two nations.

Chávez had been charged for her alleged role in a 2022 coup attempt and was sentenced to over 11 years in prison. However, she was released on bail in September 2025 and subsequently denied the charges against her.

The restoration of diplomatic ties between Mexico and Peru is seen as a positive step towards healing the rift that had developed between the two countries.
