Miami Grand Prix Returns: Full BBC Coverage Schedule and Sprint Race Details

Formula 1 is back after a five-week break with the Miami Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome from 1-3 May. This fourth round of the season is also the second sprint event of the 22-race calendar.

Teenager Kimi Antonelli, at just 19 years old, has become the youngest driver in F1 history to lead the drivers' championship after his victory in Japan last month. The Italian, who shared the podium at Suzuka with McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, now holds a nine-point lead over his Mercedes teammate George Russell.

The sprint race takes place on Saturday at 17:00 BST, while the main 57-lap grand prix starts at 21:00 BST on Sunday.

First practice on Friday has been extended to 90 minutes to give teams and drivers extra track time after the break and to help them adapt to the rule changes introduced this weekend.

Session start times and BBC coverage

Commentary will be available across BBC Radio 5 Live, BBC Sounds, and the BBC Sport website and app. You can also listen via most smart speakers by asking to "play BBC Radio 5 Live" or "play BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra."

Don't miss the Chequered Flag podcast, and for the first time this year, the post-race show for every grand prix is available to watch on BBC iPlayer and YouTube.

Miami weather forecast

The early forecast predicts possible light rain on race day. Temperatures over the three days should range from 31C to 32C, with Saturday's sprint and qualifying expected to be sunny. Sunday's race, starting at 4pm local time, may see showers and a gentle breeze.

How the sprint race works

The sprint format has a minor tweak for 2026 due to Cadillac's arrival. The sprint is a shorter race (19 laps this weekend) that determines the grid for the main grand prix in a separate qualifying session. Points are awarded to the top eight finishers.
