Microsoft has released a dedicated Legal Agent for lawyers within Microsoft Word, now available through the Frontier program in the US.
The AI-powered tool is designed to streamline contract review by analyzing documents clause by clause, flagging risks and obligations, and comparing different versions of agreements. It suggests edits via tracked changes, preserves formatting, and distinguishes earlier revisions from new proposals. Users can also cross-check contracts against their own internal guidelines.
Microsoft developed the agent with input from legal professionals. Rather than relying solely on general-purpose AI models, the tool employs structured workflows and a custom algorithm to ensure consistent handling of edits. This means the language model does not generate every change directly.
The Legal Agent operates within Microsoft 365's existing security and compliance framework and requires no additional installation. Early access to Microsoft's newest AI features is available through the Frontier program.
