Monica's crooked journey has reached its end. During the April 27 episode of The Rookie, the corrupt lawyer played by Bridget Regan finally danced too close to the sun after double-crossing both the feds and the criminal underworld one too many times.
In the episode, ominously titled "Dead Ringer," Monica seeks a way out that allows her to start fresh while maintaining her lavish lifestyle. But both law enforcement and criminal bigwig Aiden realize she's trying to outsmart them.
Aiden seemingly offers Monica an escape: a plane waiting at LAX to fly her to safety. On the way, she makes one stop at her ex-boyfriend Wesley's home. They share an earnest heart-to-heart, with Monica admitting she wanted to see him in her last hour in LA, while he tries to convince her it's not too late to turn things around. But she knows it is.
As Monica heads to the airport, her rideshare driver pointedly passes the exit for LAX, and Monica realizes her fate is sealed. She doesn't fight it, only asking her soon-to-be assassin, "Please, not the face." Her wish is granted: the next day, her body is discovered on the side of the road, shot twice in the chest.
Reflecting on her character's demise, Bridget Regan told TV Insider she wasn't surprised. "If you play with fire, as long as she has, eventually you're going to get burned. ... She's on her 37th life." She added, "What I was surprised by was just how incredibly sad I was for her. Not that she died, but that she never truly flipped, that she actually succumbed to the dark side and couldn't find her way back."
Regan expressed gratitude for her four-season run on the show, calling it an "amazing run."
