Montpellier delivered a commanding performance to eliminate Connacht from the European Challenge Cup with a decisive 45-22 victory at the Septeo Stadium, advancing to the semi-finals.
Stuart Lancaster's Connacht side saw their six-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt in France, where they struggled with discipline from the outset. The visitors received three yellow cards in the first half alone, allowing Montpellier to build a commanding 26-8 lead by halftime.
"Montpellier capitalised on every opportunity, scoring four tries in the first half and adding three more after the break to secure their place in the last four," noted match analysts.
Sam Gilbert gave Connacht an early lead with a penalty kick, but Montpellier quickly responded with a penalty try from a five-metre maul. The match turned decisively when Connacht found themselves reduced to 13 players after yellow cards for Dylan Tierney-Martin and Shamus Hurley-Langton.
Christopher Tolofua extended Montpellier's advantage with a try in the 14th minute. Connacht briefly rallied when Tierney-Martin scored from a flowing move, but further tries from Mohamed Haouas and Domingo Miotti before halftime put the game firmly in Montpellier's control.
Sean Naughton's try early in the second half offered Connacht a glimmer of hope, but Montpellier responded emphatically. Auguste Cadot produced the try of the match, weaving through multiple defenders to score, before Ali Price added another from close range.
Jack Aungier managed a late consolation try for Connacht, but Valentin Welsch had the final say with a last-minute score for the hosts.
Montpellier will now face the winner of the Zebre versus Dragons quarter-final in the semi-finals next month, while Connacht return home to reflect on what might have been.
