Dianna Russini, a prominent NFL reporter, has resigned from her position at The Athletic following a media storm surrounding photographs showing her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
Russini submitted her resignation on Tuesday, stating she leaves with her professional integrity intact. In her departure letter, she emphasized her commitment to journalistic standards and defended her body of work.
"I have handled my responsibilities with professionalism and dedication throughout my career," Russini wrote. "I stand by every story that carries my byline."
The reporter, who joined The Athletic in 2023 after leaving ESPN, attributed her decision to what she called "self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts." She expressed frustration with what she described as a media frenzy that continued despite The Athletic's ongoing internal review process.
"This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete," Russini stated. "It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept."
Russini clarified that her resignation, effective before her contract expires on June 30, represents a personal choice rather than an admission of wrongdoing.
"I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career."
The controversy stems from photographs published last week showing Russini and Vrabel together at a luxury resort in Arizona. Both individuals, who are married to other people, have characterized the images as depicting innocent social interactions among friends.
Vrabel dismissed the photographs as "laughable" and maintained they showed nothing more than an "innocent interaction." Russini similarly downplayed the significance of the images when they first surfaced.
Despite initially supporting Russini, The Athletic subsequently launched an internal investigation into the matter. That review remains active even as Russini departs the organization.
Meanwhile, Patriots executive Eliot Wolf confirmed that Vrabel continues to be fully engaged in the team's daily operations despite the ongoing controversy. The Patriots organization has characterized the situation as "business as usual" for their head coach.
Russini's departure marks another significant career move for the reporter, who previously spent eight years at ESPN before joining The Athletic last year. Her resignation comes amid heightened scrutiny of relationships between sports journalists and the figures they cover.
