NHS Couch to 5K App Hits Decade Milestone with 8 Million Downloads and 1 Billion Active Minutes

The NHS Couch to 5K app is marking its 10th anniversary this year, having been downloaded over eight million times and supporting more than one billion minutes of physical activity since its launch.

Developed through a partnership between the BBC and the UK's Department of Health and Social Care, the free app provides a structured nine-week training plan designed to help complete beginners transition from a sedentary lifestyle to running a full 5 kilometers.

"NHS Couch to 5K has been a real success story, and to achieve supporting over one billion minutes of movement over a decade from runners across the UK is truly incredible," said Kate Phillips, the BBC's chief content officer. "We all know the physical and mental benefits of taking up regular exercise."

The National Health Service highlights that consistent running can significantly lower the risk of developing chronic conditions like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. Additionally, it promotes healthier weight management and enhances overall mood and mental well-being.

To celebrate the anniversary, the BBC is airing special programming, including a unique 'Traitors'-themed episode of its popular Couch to 5K Podcast. The app remains freely available for download on both Apple and Android platforms, continuing its mission to make running accessible to everyone.
