Local officials in Nice cited concerns over cost, environmental impact, and the long-term utility of a large ice sports facility in a coastal Mediterranean city. "We must prioritize sustainable development over temporary sporting spectacles," the mayor stated in a press release.
In response, Paris and Lyon have accelerated their preparations, with both cities proposing existing arenas and newly designed venues that align with Olympic requirements. Paris, already hosting the 2024 Summer Games, sees an opportunity to leverage its infrastructure. Lyon, known for its sports culture, is pushing for a decentralized model.
The International Olympic Committee is expected to review the bids by year-end. The 2030 Winter Olympics, currently without a confirmed host, could become a battleground for French cities eager to claim the global spotlight.
