Eddie Howe admitted to feeling unusual anxiety before Newcastle United's crucial Premier League clash with Brighton, but a 3-1 victory at St James' Park provided a much-needed boost for the under-pressure manager.
"There was a moment where I woke up and thought, 'Oh dear, what day is it?' It's really unusual for me," Howe revealed. "I'm a really good sleeper, but there was an anxiety for me last night where I'm going into today's game just wanting the team to perform."
The win came after a difficult period for Newcastle, who had lost nine of their previous 12 matches and sat 15th in the table. Howe faced tough questions at a recent club summit attended by the owners, and though he felt support from above, he knew a turnaround was needed.
William Osula proved to be the unlikely hero, opening the scoring in a match where Howe trusted young Danish striker over more expensive alternatives. The 22-year-old's pace troubled Brighton's defense throughout, and he left the pitch to a standing ovation.
"He's very hungry, motivated and believes in himself," Howe said of Osula. "I think he has a really bright future."
The victory was watched by chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan and minority owner Jamie Reuben, as Newcastle ended their losing streak against an in-form Brighton side.
