Oxford United have been relegated from the Championship after just two years, following Charlton Athletic's 2-1 victory over Hull City on Saturday. The result made it impossible for Matt Bloomfield's side to close the gap, ending their brief stay in the second tier.
The U's secured promotion via the League One play-offs in 2024 but struggled from the outset this season, losing their first three league games. At Christmas, they were two points adrift of safety with only four wins to their name. The poor run led to the dismissal of head coach Gary Rowett, who had taken over from promotion-winning manager Des Buckingham in December 2024 and guided the club to safety last term.
Matt Bloomfield, formerly of Luton and Wycombe, was appointed on 9 January but failed to spark an immediate turnaround, winning just one of his first nine matches. A brief resurgence in late February, with three consecutive wins against West Brom, Preston, and Blackburn, levelled points with 21st-placed Leicester, but only one win in the subsequent seven fixtures left them five points behind Blackburn and six behind Charlton with two games to play. The gap now stands at an insurmountable seven points.
West Brom's two-point deduction on Friday put them at risk, but a draw with promotion-chasing Ipswich kept them safe. Oxford conclude their season with an away trip to promotion hopefuls Millwall next week.
Bloomfield said after Tuesday's defeat to Wrexham: "We're terribly disappointed. It's tough when you don't get the result you want. I was desperate to give our supporters something to go into the weekend, but we couldn't do that. I feel a strong sense of responsibility."
Defender Sam Long, a first-team regular since 2013, expressed the team's hurt: "We haven't been good enough and it hurts. We let the fans down."
