Birmingham Panthers secured their first victory of the Netball Super League season in heart-stopping fashion, edging out the Dragons 48-47 with a last-second goal.
Sophie Egbaran emerged as the hero for the Panthers, sinking the decisive shot as time expired to snap a six-game losing streak. The dramatic finish capped a roller-coaster match that saw Birmingham squander a five-point halftime lead before mounting a final-minute comeback.
"Even I got emotional, because the girls deserved that," said Panthers head coach Sonia Mkoloma. "In these last couple of weeks they've never given up believing that they can win this and they can win again."
The Panthers appeared headed for another defeat when they trailed by one point with just 90 seconds remaining. After Dragons shooter Niamh McCall missed a crucial opportunity, Betsy Creak leveled the score for Birmingham, setting the stage for Egbaran's dramatic winner.
Egbaran, who finished with 22 goals, described the tense final moments: "It was so exciting, even to the last second I was really feeling the pressure. Constantly talking to the whole attacking unit, saying, 'We're not losing this game.'"
The victory lifts Birmingham off the bottom of the table, moving them level on points with Leeds Rhinos, who fell 63-49 to Manchester Thunder.
Elsewhere in the league, Loughborough Lightning maintained their perfect season with a narrow 75-73 victory over Nottingham Forest. The win restores Lightning's three-point lead at the top of the standings over London Pulse, who defeated London Mavericks 56-46 on Friday.
Manchester Thunder rebounded from last week's defeat with their victory over Leeds, while the league table saw no other positional changes following this round of matches.
