Paralympic Legend and Racing Icon Alex Zanardi Dies at 59

Alex Zanardi, the Italian motorsports champion who became a Paralympic gold medalist after losing both legs in a crash, died Friday at age 59. His family announced his passing Saturday, saying he "died peacefully, surrounded by the affection of those closest to him." The cause of death was not disclosed.

Zanardi's life was defined by resilience. In 2001, a horrific CART race accident in Germany cost him his legs, but he designed his own prosthetics and relearned to walk. He went on to dominate hand cycling, winning multiple Paralympic gold medals.

In 2020, he suffered severe head and facial injuries when his handbike hit a truck during a relay event in Tuscany, leaving him in a coma. Though he survived, he never fully returned to public life.

Before his first crash, Zanardi had already made his mark in racing, winning CART championships in 1997 and 1998 and competing in Formula One. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called him "an extraordinary man" who "gave hope, pride, and the strength to never give up."

Zanardi is survived by his wife Daniela and their son Niccolò.
