Paris Taxi Scam Costs Traveler £493, Monzo Refuses Refund

A traveler from the UK has reported being scammed out of £493 by a fraudulent taxi driver in Paris, only to have their bank, Monzo, deny a chargeback request. The incident highlights growing concerns over consumer protection when using digital banking services abroad.

The victim took a taxi from Charles de Gaulle Airport to central Paris. The driver allegedly used a card machine that displayed a legitimate-looking interface but charged an inflated amount. The passenger only realized the scam after checking their Monzo app and seeing the unauthorized transaction.

Despite reporting the issue promptly and providing evidence, Monzo rejected the chargeback claim, stating that the transaction was authorized via chip and PIN. The bank advised the customer to contact the French transport authorities, who have yet to respond.

Consumer advocates argue that banks should do more to protect customers from such scams, especially when traveling. Monzo, known for its app-based banking and real-time notifications, has faced criticism for its handling of the case, with some questioning whether its fraud detection systems are adequate.

The victim has since taken to social media to share their experience, warning other travelers to be cautious when paying by card in taxis. They are now considering legal action against Monzo.

This case serves as a cautionary tale about the risks of card payments abroad and the potential limitations of chargeback protections with digital-only banks.
