In a recent episode of Business Edge 2.0, host Blake Doyle delivered a stark analysis of Prince Edward Island's escalating provincial debt, which has nearly doubled over the past decade. Drawing on reports from the Auditor General and the Fraser Institute, Doyle warned that overspending and heavy reliance on federal transfers are eroding the province's economic autonomy.
The per capita debt is projected to hit $22,300 by 2028, placing a growing burden on residents. Doyle also criticized the province's high, non-indexed tax brackets, which he argues deter talent and investment.
The episode calls for immediate fiscal discipline and “political courage” to prevent an unsustainable financial legacy for future generations.
