If you're ready to leave social media behind, deleting your Facebook and Instagram accounts is a straightforward process—but it's important to understand the difference between deactivation and permanent deletion. This guide walks you through the steps to permanently remove your profiles from Meta's platforms.
Deactivation vs. Deletion
- Deactivation temporarily hides your profile. You can reactivate at any time by logging back in.
- Deletion permanently removes your account and data. After you initiate deletion, there's a 30-day grace period during which you can cancel the process by logging in. After 30 days, your account is gone for good.
Steps to Delete Your Account
- Access Accounts Center: Log in to Facebook or Instagram, go to Settings, then click on Accounts Center (under "Meta Accounts Center").
- Choose Account Type: In Accounts Center, select Personal Details > Account Ownership and Control > Deactivation or Deletion.
- Select Account: Choose whether you want to delete your Facebook account, Instagram account, or both.
- Confirm Deletion: Follow the on-screen prompts to confirm. You'll be asked to re-enter your password.
- Wait Out the Grace Period: Your account will be deactivated for 30 days. Log in anytime within that period to cancel deletion.
Important Notes
- Deleting one account does not automatically delete the other. You must repeat the process for each account you want to remove.
- Data such as messages sent to others may remain visible in their inboxes.
- If you use Facebook to log in to other apps, you'll need to set up alternative login methods before deletion.
Once the 30-day window passes, your accounts and associated data are permanently erased. There's no going back. Make sure to download any photos or data you want to keep before starting the process.
